Janet Pitsiulaaq Brewster

Biography

Janet Pitsiulaaq Brewster is a multi-disciplinary artist and activist from Talurjuaq (Spence Bay), NU who is based out of Iqaluit, NU. She began carving at age 11 and works consistently as an artist alongside her other positions [1]. Brewster is also the Executive Director of Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association.

As an activist Brewster has devoted her career to working for community in organizing community-engagement projects as well as northern development and advocacy [2]. She became known throughout Iqaluit for transforming graffiti into positive messages, covering the previous image or statement with words of kindness and support.

Brewster has served on the Board of Directors of Alianait Arts Festival, Toonik Tyme Festival, the Aboriginal Healing Foundation and the Uquutaq Society. She has also worked with the National Gallery, Ottawa, ON as an intern. Brewster has been featured by publications such as Inuit Art Quarterly and Maclean’s to name a couple.
