Rebecca Hutchings

Biography

Rebecca Hutchings is an artist born and living in Kinngait (Cape Dorset), NU. Her mother was a teacher and doll maker, and Hutchings has followed in her footsteps by becoming both a teacher and an artist. Hutchings depicts animals, objects and clothing [1], for example her work Untitled (Seal Bag) (n.d.), Hutchings captures the drawn the curved body of a seal, which has an adjustable strap and zipper attached to it's back. Hutchings created this work in response to anti-seal rhetoric, to highlight the importance of seal for Inuit communities, while also injecting humour into this difficult conversation. Hutchings often uses coloured pencils for her intricate pieces and captures the smallest of details, from zippers and clasps to individual hairs and beads. She is also a Community Liaison Officer for Nunavut Tunngavik.

Accomplishments

2014: Became an accredited teacher through the Nunavut Teacher Education Program (NTEP).
2012: Was awarded a Nunasi Scholarship to continue pursuing academic excellence.
