Annie Pootoogook was a graphic artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), NU. Having grown up with the artistic influence of her mother, Napachie Pootoogook, and her grandmother Pitseolak Ashoona, it was clear that Pootoogook herself would start drawing. In 1997 she started producing and, less than a decade later, she had attracted national attention. In 2006 she had a major solo show at The Power Plant in Toronto, ON, and later that year she won the 2006 Sobey Art Award. Not long after, she went on to receive international acclaim as a featured artist at the Montreal Biennale (2007) and documenta 12 (2007) in Kassel, Germany. Pootoogook's success can be attributed to her honest renditions of her daily life. Her work has been described as satirical, witty and brave, and it includes a wide range of subject matter, from men's undergarments to the artist herself breaking bottles, such as in "Memory of my Life: Breaking Bottles" (2002), and the inside of a grocery store in Kinngait.View Long Biography and Citations
